Schubert's Ave Maria was not in fact composed as a setting for the Catholic prayer. It was actually composed for part of Sir Walter Scott's The Lady of the Lake. "Ellen's Song" from the Scott poem begins with "Ave Maria'" and the misconception grew, with the Latin eventually supplanting the Scott.
