The Personal History of David Copperfield

Image
Armando Iannuci and Dev Patel triumph in this beautiful adaptation. Copperfield/Dicken's passion for words, for paper, for pen and ink... Dora's heartbreak... Micawber's illness... The moment the mature Copperfield assures his younger self that he will survive the workhouse to write, write, and use it all... And the cast! Patel, Capaldi, Swinton, Wishaw, Laurie,

In Poltergeist 2 (1986), the character of Kane was played by Julian Beck. In The Addams Family (1991), Grandmama was played by Judith Malina. Married in real life, Malina and Beck together founded the groundbreaking, experimental Living Theatre in 1947.

Ann Reinking

It breaks my heart that Ann Reinking has passed at a time when Broadway is dark.  Hard to imagine anyone more deserving of the tribute of the dimming of those marquee lights.

The eyes, the quiet... visible thought

Image
I think it heartbreaking that Philip Seymour Hoffman and Mark Rylance never worked together. Matthew Warchus directed them both and certainly thought of them as artists with a deep kinship.

Metropolitan Museum of Art

Remembering Art, a co-worker at the American Booksellers Association in Tarrytown. Art was retired and worked a few hours each week to pass the time. Our talks turned to his long held passion for art glass, a subject I knew very little about. Before long, we'd arranged to meet the next Saturday at the Met in Central Park where Art gave me personal tour of the glass collection.  Art and Art. And lunch in the roof garden!

Schiele and Amichai

And she will shut his wild letters in a quiet drawer and lie down to sleep beside the water in the wall and she will know the reasons for weeping and for holding back and he has decided on tenderness.
