Fantastic Voyage

Image
Watching Fantastic Voyage (1966). As the ship is moving through the bloodstream, Raquel Welch, outside the ship on an E.V.A, is suddenly being attacked by antibodies. Raquel Welch. Antibodies. 1966. Coded sexism.

"I certainly admire people who do things." Raymond Chandler

Miss Marple

Image
Margaret Rutherford, Angela Lansbury, Helen Hayes, Joan Hickson, Geraldine McEwan, Julia McKenzie. What a pity the role was never played by Coral Browne! A bitchy, sharp-tongued Miss Marple. "Such an unpleasant subject."

Biopic

Image
An episode of SVU featuring a remarkable performance by actor Bess Rous. She should play Janis Ian. Maybe in the story of how Bill Cosby tried to destroy her career.

"I had a farm in Africa."

"You coud have asked, Denys." "I did. She said yes."

Othello & Pee Wee

Image
The death of comedian and actor John Paragon has led to a morning of Pee Wee's Playhouse. I had remembered two, but just realized that the show had featured three notable Othellos. William Marshall (The King of Cartoons), Laurence Fishburne (Cowboy Curtis), and Jimmy Smits (Johnny Wilson), who played Othello at the Colorado Shakespeare Festival)

Sonnet 30

Image
I have been ranting about the recent Final Jeopardy question regarding Sonnet 30. My favorite poem  The most beautiful poem ever written. Most importantly, it is also the first poem my daughter ever heard. I whispered it to her as I held her when she was just hours old.

Dunning-Kruger corollary

When those who are enormously successful in their field now think that their views on anything are worth sharing. J.K. Rowling Patricia Cornwell Jerry Seinfeld and now Richard Dawkins

Sir Harold Nicolson, diplomat and husband of Vita Sackville-West. Harold Nicholson, ex-CIA agent and twice-convicted Soviet spy.

Wand Lore

Image
I think wand lore is the most fascinating concept Rowling created for the Harry Potter books. Mine, I believe, would be Sycamore, with a Swan Quill core.

EGOT

Image
That peculiar schadenfreude you feel when you realize that the person who coined the term EGOT-- Philip Michael Thomas of Miami Vice-- never won any of the awards.
