MM

Image
Playwright Robert Patrick posted this photo with the comment: "Sometimes you stumble over a photo of her in which she is so beautiful you just gasp." This was then reposted by the wonderful Miriam Margolyes, saying: "Another, more important MM."

Sling Blade

Image
In the Billy Bob Thornton movie Sling Blade (1996), the character of Karl (Thornton) visits Vaughn (John Ritter), to ask for his help. When Vaughn answers the door he is holding a book in his arms. You cannot see the cover. You cannot see the title. The book is never mentioned. Only the corner of the book is visible.

Biopic

Image
Ntare Mwine should play young Lou Gossett, Jr. in a biopic.

Highgate Tube Station

Image
The Telegraph incorrectly printed that Jerry Springer was born in East Finchley Tube Station during World War II. It was Highgate.

Ke Huy Quan

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom was on tonight. Nice to see Ke Huy Quan as Short Round a few days before he gets nominated for an Oscar for his work in Everything Everywhere All at Once.

An Overdue Addendum...

Image
Five years ago, I posted the following: "To my mind,  each of these describes the same world: de Chirico, Brancusi, Gaudi, the 1973 Czech film Fantastic Planet, Borges' “Tlon, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius,” Satie ’ s   Trois Gymnopédies,  Bosch’s Garden of Earthly Delights,  Gulliver's Travels ,  Cirque du Soleil ,  Brian Quinette’s Invisible Library,   both the  Codex Seraphianus  and the Voynich Manuscript, the library at Alexandria, the game of chess and the numbered (but not the titled) chapters of Calvino's   If, on a Winter's Night, a Traveler,  And Barcelona" Over time, I have added The Griffin and Sabine Trilogy and Shakespeare's The Tempest. And today I add the Antikythera Mechanism.

Alliterative Agnew

Image
According to William Safire, the phrase ' pusillanimous pussyfooters' was written for Spiro Agnew by Pat Buchanan, while Safire himself wrote 'nattering nabobs of negativism.' And no, 'Alliterative Agnew' is not alliteration. It's assonance.

Apparently, this is also known as "Newton's Balls." Rude.

Karenina onscreen

Image
The screenplay for the 1948 Anna Karenina with Vivien Leigh was written by Jean Anouilh!

Va, pensiero

"By the rivers of Babylon, we sat down, yes, we wept..." "By Grand Central Station, I sat down and wept..." "By the River Piedra, I sat down and wept..."
