The world premiere of Eugene O'Neill's masterpiece was directed by this guy! The first performance of the play was in Stockholm on February 2, 1956, directed by Bengt Ekerot, who played Death in Ingmar Bergman's The Seventh Seal a year later. In November of 1956, the Jose Quintero directed production opened on Broadway.

Daughter

Yesterday, at breakfast, I was talking to my daughter.  Teaching, really.  I was talking about art and science, history and philosophy.  Dickens and Calvino. Whistler and Chagall. The gravitas of Bergman and the levity of Tati. When I paused to take a breath, my daughter turned to my wife and asked  “Mommy, what does  ‘buffoon’ mean again?”

 The great science fiction writer, author of such works as A Boy and His Dog, I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream and the greatest episode of Star Trek, The City on the Edge of Forever, was, personally, a little grumpy. A real SOB. Robert Bloch, author of Psycho, described Ellison as "the only living organism whose natural habitat is hot water."
