The Virgil Thompson opera, Four Saints in Three Acts, with a libretto by Gertrude Stein, in fact involved more than twenty saints. In four acts. Other lies: Stein claimed that it would "finish opera the way that Picasso finished oil painting." Neither was finished.

I've long been fascinated by Alma Mahler, but I somehow missed the heart-breaking story of her daughter, Manon Gropius. Dying at age eighteen, Manon inspired both Alban Berg's violin concerto and her step-father Franz Werfel's novel The Song of Bernadette, later adapted as a film starring Jennifer Jones.
