It has long been accepted that critic Kenneth Tynan was the first to utter the F-word on the BBC, in 1965. However, there are three claims that may have beat (ahem) him.
Playwright Brendan Behan claimed to have mumbled the word in 1956 on the show Panorama.
A railway maintenance worker being interviewed about his job in 1959.
And best of all, a young Miriam Margolyes claims to have used the word in frustration on University Challenge in 1963!
There is no proof of any claim, sadly.
