Corrida de Toros

The suicide of Ernest Hemingway, that great bull of a man, was surely foreshadowed by his fascination with bullfighting. Death in the Afternoon. The Sun Also Rises. No doubt the connection was conscious in his last moments.

Acquainted with the night

Image
I have been one acquainted with the night. I have walked out in rain — and back in rain. I have outwalked the furthest city light. I have looked down the saddest city lane. I have passed by the watchman on his beat And dropped my eyes, unwilling to explain. I have stood still and stopped the sound of feet When far away an interrupted cry Came over houses from another street, But not to call me back or say good-bye; And further still at an unearthly height, One luminary clock against the sky Proclaimed the time was neither wrong nor right.  I have been one acquainted with the night.

Tears in the Rain

Image
"I've seen things you people wouldn't believe... Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion... I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain... Time to die."

The Lake Isle of Innisfree

Image
I will arise and go now, and go to Innisfree, And a small cabin build there, of clay and wattles made; Nine bean-rows will I have there, a hive for the honey-bee, And live alone in the bee-loud glade. And I shall have some peace there, for peace comes dropping slow, Dropping from the veils of the morning to where the cricket sings; There midnight’s all a glimmer, and noon a purple glow, And evening full of the linnet’s wings. I will arise and go now, for always night and day I hear lake water lapping with low sounds by the shore; While I stand on the roadway, or on the pavements grey, I hear it in the deep heart’s core. W.B. Yeats

A Passage to India

Image
Where is the opera of A Passage to India? Empire, the terrifying mystery in the Marabar Caves, the anger of the trial, the passionate elegy first at the loss of Mrs Moore and then at the Loss of Mrs Moore. Musical shyness in Adela. The arc of Dr Aziz from suspicion to friend to bitter anger. Is this Orientalism or comment on Orientalism. Maybe a meta-aria from a baritone Edward Said...
